Itinerary Details

Day 1: Lemosho/ Londorossi Gate (2250 m) To Mti Mkubwa Camp (2650 m)

  • Transfer from your hotel in Moshi to reach Londorossi gate for registration formalities
  • Get transferred by vehicle to the climbing starting point located 12 km further from the gate
  • Have lunch before initiating the hike
  • Climb steadily through the rainforest while spotting animals like bufallos and elephants
  • The path leads to  Mti Mkubwa camp for dinner and overnight stay

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp (2650 m) To Shira Camp 1 (3610 m)

  • Trek out of the rainforest into the low alpine zone to reach Shira ridge
  • Have lunch enroute and proceed with climbing to arrive at Shira Camp in the late afternoon
  • Dinner and overnight stay at the camp

Day 3: Shira Camp 1(3610 m) To Shira Camp 2 (3850 m)

  • Climb through the Shira plateau for a full day providing a chance for acclimatization
  • The trail leads to Shira 2 camp to take the rest of the day off resting and gaining energy
  • Dinner and overnight stay at the camp

Day 4: Shira 2 (3850 m) To Lava Tower (4600 m) To Barranco Camp (3900 m)

  • Start by ascending up a ridge towards Lava tower which provides an extra day for acclimatization
  • Have rest and time for lunch while at the tower
  • Descend down and proceed with the trail to reach at Barranco Camp for an evening arrival
  • Dinner and overnight stay at the camp

Day 5: Barranco Camp (3900 m) To Karanga Camp (4000 m)

  • Climb on a steep ridge passing the Barranco Wall leading to the Karanga Valley
  • The short trail is meant for acclimatization which will finally lead to Karanga camp
  • Dinner and overnight stay at the camp

Day 6: Karanga Camp (4000 m) To Barafu Camp (4673 m)

  • Leave out of Karanga and join the junction connecting with the Mweka trail
  • Continue with the climb to finally arrive at Barafu camp
  • Have rest and take much water as possible in preparing for the final summit
  • Retire to bed early by 19:00

Day 7: Ascend To Uhuru Peak (5895 m)

  • Wake up around 23:00 for adding more warm clothes and headlamps
  • Leave the camp and start summiting by midnight into the glacial zone
  • The path leads to Stella point (5756 m)after a6 hour walkto arrive at sunrise
  • Have time for photographs and a little rest while at the summit
  • For climbers who have experienced AMS are advised to start descending, however for those interested can take a round trip along the crater rim to reach Uhuru Peak (5895 m)
  • Proceed by descending down the mountain to arrive at Mweka Hut (3100 m)

Day 8: Mweka Camp (3100 m) to Mweka Gate (1640 m)

  • After a hot breakfast, continue hiking through the beautiful green forest to arrive at Mweka gate
  • Take time to show gratitude to the crew by tipping guides, cooks and porters
  • Get awarded with certificates whereby golden certificates are given to hikers who reached Uhuru peak and green certificates for Stella point hikers
  • Retreat back to Mweka village for a drive to Moshi town or airport for a flight back home
